Job Description
The Associate Editor is responsible for generating, editing, and proofreading editorial copy approved by the Publisher/Editor for each issue and by researching topics, establishing and maintaining contacts in the field, and interviewing various sources to ensure the availability of quality articles for the magazines.
 
Duties and responsibilities/essential function:
  • Researches and writes feature articles for Journals, or other publications as assigned.
  • Writes and/or edits department copy.
  • Edits and proofreads copy, including articles, research papers, and departments.
  • Selects press releases and other items for inclusion in pertinent departments.
  • Obtains articles for topics on the Specialized Journal editorial calendar by communicating with members, past authors, and key industry contacts.
 Reports to:
  • Managing Editor
Direct Report(s):
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Required Qualifications include the following:
  • S. or B.S. in Journalism, Communications, or English.
  • Three years’ experience in trade journalism or technical writing.
  • A master’s degree in one of the above fields can substitute for part of the experience requirement.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit.
  • Strong storytelling, writing and editing skill.
  • High-resolution photo and/or video skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Must be able to manage oneself to work within stringent deadlines.
  • Must possess the attitude and ability to be nimble and ready to adapt to changing conditions in an environment bound by production deadlines.
  • Must be available for travel to industry events and locales for original reporting assignments.
Preferred Qualifications include the following:
  • Experience with digital publishing.
  • Ability to use Adobe InDesign or Quark design/editing software.
  • Experience in CMS platforms such as WordPress. Basic HTML coding skills.
  • Experience with Photoshop, Canva and/or other visual tools.
